Provide health education and anti-parasite medications to an entire school!
We take preventative health knowledge for granted, but for a young student in rural Honduras, it can be a life-saver. By providing anti-parasite medicines, hygiene education, and hygiene Supplies, you can help keep children healthy and happy.
Health programming begins with a full regimen of anti-parasite / deworming medicines. Children living in rural areas, especially those who swim in rural water and live in less sterile environments are at higher risk of getting parasitic worms, which invade the stomach or gut. This results in reduced nutrient intake, diarrhea, chronic malnutrition, and fatigue. It also causes pain and discomfort, and often causes children to miss school. These simple and inexpensive pills, taken just once every three months, help children live a parasitic worm free life. And reducing the parasites reduces the incidence across the rest of the community by as much as 70%.
The second part is Hygiene Education & Supplies. VHCMB staff visit each school at once per month to provide classes on basic hygiene concepts and behaviors. These lessons, performed in schools with the active support of school administration, include lectures, short videos on projectors, and demonstrations. Children love the videos, and are delighted to try hand-washing with UV sensitive dye to test their hand-washing techniques. These practices, from theory to practice, build positive hygienic behaviors which reduce disease and improve dental health. To catalyze the adoption of these hygiene practices, student occasionally receive hygiene kits, with basic hygiene supplies.
