An Investment With Untold Returns - Kenny's Story
When Kenny and his mother showed up one morning last November for his physical therapy appointment, they both looked quite bedraggled.
Kenny was tired from having been carried, awkwardly and uncomfortably, for the hour it took to get to our rehabilitation center in Comayagua, Honduras. His mother was tired because Kenny was now 12 years old and weighed 50 pounds. All his life, she’d been carrying him everywhere for everything he needed. What else could she do?
Born with spina bifida – an incurable birth defect resulting in paralysis – Kenny’s outlook was not bright. He’d never been able to go to school, or make friends, or even sit up. His life was limited to complete reliance on his mother.
But on this unexpectedly wonderful day for Kenny and his mother, something was waiting for them at the rehabilitation center that would completely change their lives: an adjustable pediatric wheelchair – the first wheelchair of Kenny’s life.
With good back support, feet and leg supports, arm rests, pads and cushions, belts and straps, and everything it takes to promote optimal well-being for a child whose condition is lifelong, this wheelchair will not only improve Kenny’s physical health but will also enable him to go to school, to learn what others are learning, to meet people, to make friends, to go places without being carried – to begin to have a life. And as for Kenny’s mother – what more need be said?
